Pureform & PureKids Radiology adheres to the revised Breast Cancer Screening Clinic Practice Guidelines (September 2013), which are available form the Towards Optimized Practice (TOP) website here. These guidelines state the optimal interval of mammography screening for a woman of average risk:
Patients may not fall into the average risk category for reasons such as dense breast tissue or family history of breast cancer. These patients will be recalled appropriately.
On April 21, 2015 the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) reiterated its recommendation that women ages 40-49 be screened yearly for breast cancer and those ages 50-74 be screened every one to two years, as outlined in the CAR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards for Breast Imaging and Intervention.
The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association continue to recommend annual mammograms between ages 40 to 69. After age 70 they recommend evaluating the frequency with the patient. Alberta Health continues to fund annual screening mammograms in the province if requested by the referring physician or patient.
